SUPERMARKETS

Apart from a small corner shop in Carrapateira, there are supermarkets in the neighbouring towns of Vila do Bispo and Aljezur. Both are about 20 minutes away. Be sure to pick up some freshly squeezed orange juice at the juice press! Oranges grow all year round in Portugal and are wonderfully aromatic.

FRESH FOOD

Fresh fish and regional vegetables and fruit can be found at the local markets, in Vila do Bispo or in Aljezur. Grilled sardines are a classic. There you can also sample typical local delicacies directly from the stalls. Medronho, schnapps from the strawberry tree, is a good choice here. Or local almonds roasted in the shell. Biscuits and tremoços (the yellow snack of the Algarve) are also worth a try.

CUISINE

So simple - so good! In Portugal, the art of preparing simple, delicious dishes has been perfected. Specialities include caldeirada de peixe (seafood stew), porco preto (black pig), bacalhau (stockfish), pastéis de nata (custard tarts) and port wine. There is also a considerable selection of cheeses and excellent wines. Vinho Verde, or "green wine", is a delicious summer companion when chilled.

RESTAURANTS

In Carrapateirae, you can enjoy typical local dishes in two traditional fish restaurants or international, partly vegan cuisine in a few other casual restaurants. Pizza, smoothies & co. are also on offer. The colourful gastronomic scene in the neighbouring villages completes the offer for all those who are interested in good food on holiday. The price-performance ratio is very good, especially in the traditional restaurants.
